Austrian Anti-Nukes Back at Czech Border Blockade
LCG, Nov. 3, 2000--Austrian anti-nuke demonstrators were back blockading the Czech border yesterday, protesting the nuclear power plant at Temelin in the Czech Republic, about 35 miles from Austria.The protesters took up their posts early yesterday, saying the Temelin plant was unsafe because of its Soviet design. The entire Austrian nation regards every nuclear plant as unsafe, no matter who designed it.The demonstrators could make matters worse for themselves, observers say. Czech Prime Minister and Austrian Chancellor Wolfgang Schssel began a meeting late Tuesday in an attempt to iron out differences over Temelin."The blockades could damage the beginning of dialogue with Prague," the Austrian news agency quoted Schssel as saying.The protesters are blocking the border under a permit issued by Austrian authorities, a point that bothered Zeman, who said he had been assured "that the permit for the demonstrations was issued before the meeting.""If not, then of course my visit to Vienna is very seriously threatened, if not made impossible. Clearly, the blockade contradicts the decisions we reached," Zeman added.Schssel has warned the Czech Republic that Austria would block its application for membership in the European Union if the Temelin project went ahead without a thorough safety check. But on Tuesday the two leaders agreed to work for adoption of Europe-wide nuclear safety standards.Meanwhile, operators at Temelin have the facility at 2.5 percent of full power and are holding for tests. The reactor is expected to reach full power in February.
