The Uniform Storage Model (USM) is a cutting-edge distributed storage dispatch model that transforms the management of storage resources, such as batteries, within an energy system. Unlike traditional methods, USM seamlessly integrates storage with other generation resources across the system, utilizing the powerful UPLAN optimal power flow algorithm for simultaneous optimization.

  • Year-Round Optimization: USM optimizes every aspect of battery operations throughout the entire year, covering all 8760 hours. This optimization takes into account factors such as colocation, congestion, correlations, diversity, and competition, ensuring that storage resources are leveraged to their full potential.
  • Profitability Maximization: The primary objective of USM is to maximize profitability by efficiently managing the state of charge in storage units and exploiting price differences between charging and discharging energy. USM is fully integrated into the comprehensive UPLAN-NPM© generation and transmission model, bridging the gap between theoretical storage concepts and real-world applications.
  • Ancillary Services and Security Constraints: USM facilitates the consideration of ancillary services, enabling security-constrained unit commitment and security-constrained economic dispatch for all system resources.
