Con Edison to Sell Indian Point to Entergy
LCG, Nov. 10, 2000--Consolidated Edison Co. of New York said yesterday that it had agreed to sell its Indian Point nuclear power plant to Entergy Corp. Included in the deal is Indian Point Unit 1, which has been mothballed since 1970.Entergy will pay Con Edison $502 million for the 975 megawatt Indian Point Unit 2, which is currently undergoing steam generator replacement, Indian Point Unit 1, three natural gas-fired turbines and other assets.Entergy will also pay book value for the nuclear fuel on hand at the close of the transaction, a sum expected to be around $100 million. Con Edison will transfer to Entergy the decommissioning funds for both reactors.As part of the deal, Entergy agreed to sell back to Con Edison the entire output of Indian Point Unit 2 through the year 2004 at $39 per megawatt-hour. That could mean the New York utility would get the full 975 megawatts rather than the 931 megawatts is has recently been able to squeeze out of the reactor. Entergy previously agreed to buy Indian Point unit 3 along with the James A. FitzPatrick plant nearOswego, N.Y., from the New York Power Authority and is preparing to close that transaction. "The key point is both Indian Point operating units will be managed by a single organization with more than 25 years of proven operating experience, and that will benefit New York's consumers and economy," said J. Wayne Leonard, chief executive officer of Entergy.Entergy said the 680 Indian Point employees would be transferred to Entergy Nuclear at their present salaries and with similar benefits.
