Largest Solar Facility in San Francisco Bay Area Starts Up

LCG, Dec. 8, 2000--GPU Solar Inc. said it had a grand celebration yesterday for the dedication of the San Francisco Bay Area's largest solar power facility. More than 150 dignitaries were invited to tour the plant and witness the start-up of the 100 kilowatt facility.

They had to listen to speeches, too.

GPU Solar, a joint venture between GPU Inc. and Astro Power Inc., is developer, owner and operator of the Green Mountain Solar - Berkeley plant, which is located on the roof of the Power Light Corp. manufacturing plant in Berkeley. Power Light provided engineering, procurement and construction services for the project.

Power from the facility will be transmitted on wires owned by Pacific Gas & Electric Co., where it will probably get mixed up with electricity generated from natural gas and nuclear plants. But it will be bought off those wires by customers of Green Mountain Co., the outfit that sells power generated by renewable resources.

Fred Hafer, chief executive of GPU Inc., said "By using advanced technologies to provide safe, clean renewable energy we are making a valuable contribution to improving our environment. This power project is a continuation of our efforts to tap renewable energy resources to meet customer demand."

Astro Power made the photovoltaic cells for the plant, and they are spread out in an 11,500 square-foot array. At that rate, it would take 1.7 square miles to produce 500 megawatts.
