Calpine Plans 1,000 Megawatt Texas Cogenerator
LCG, March 28, 2001-- Calpine Corp. yesterday announced plans to build, own andoperate a 1,000 megawatt natural gas-fired cogeneration plant in Deer Park, Texas, to supplysteam to Shell Chemical Co. and electric power to the wholesale market."The Deer Park Energy Center significantly strengthens Calpine's position as the largest independent power producer in Texas," said Peter Hansen, Calpine's director of business development. "It also exemplifies Calpine's ability to meet the stringent thermal energy requirements of a leading industrial consumer, like Shell Chemical, while providing a clean, reliable source of electricity for the growing Texas power market."Calpine said construction on the plant should begin in July and proceed in two phases. The first phase is scheduled to begin operation by January 2003 and the second, larger phase by June 2004. The plant will consist of four 185 megawatt gas turbines, four heat recovery steam generators and one 260 megawatt steam turbine generator.
