SCE&G Proposes 600 Megawatt Carolina Plant
LCG, April 10, 2001--South Carolina Electric & Gas Co. said this morning that it is developing plans to build a 500 to 600 megawatt combined-cycle natural gas-fueled power plant in Jasper County,in the southernmost corner of South Carolina. The new plant would cost between $250 million and $300 million and could begin commercial operation in the summer of 2004, SCE&G said. The plant would occupy 50 acres of a 500-acre parcel, allowing for future expansion and a wide buffer around the facility.SCE&G President Neville Lorick said "While we are considering several locations for buildingnew generation, Jasper County has been extremely receptive to working with us. This area has strong growth potential and we believe our power plant would provide an anchor for future development opportunities."Zenie Ingram, executive director of the Jasper Economic Development Board, agreed. "The potential tax revenues from this facility will provide significant funding that can go towards upgrading county infrastructure and schools, both critical factors to attracting additional industries and jobs."Even South Carolina Gov. Jim Hodges was enthusiastic. "This is the day that JasperCounty turns the corner for economic development, strengthening its ability to provide energyinfrastructure for new economy jobs," he said.
