Calpine in New Mexico-California Gas Pipeline Project
LCG, May 3, 2001Fast-growing power producer Calpine Corp. and natural gas firm Kinder Morgan Energy Partners said yesterday they plan to build a new pipeline from New Mexico to California to feed power plants under development by Calpine and others.The Sonoran Line would be developed in two phases, with the first phase extending from the San Juan Basin in the northwest corner of new Mexico to Southern California. This phase, a 36-inch line with a transport capacity of between 750 and 1,000 million cubic feet per day, is schedule for completion in the summer of 2003.A second phase would extend the line to Northern California and boost the carrying capacity to 1,500 million cubic feet per day. Calpine has contracted for 400 million cubic feet of natural gas per day on the first phase and 500 million cubic feet per day on the second phase.Kinder Morgan will conduct separate open seasons for each phase, seeking 20-year minimum commitments from shippers. Dates and other details of the open seasons were not disclosed.
