Bush Energy Plan Seeks Labor Support
May 15, 2001The Bush administration sought support from organized labor yesterday for the national energy policy it plans to unveil Thursday, bringing leaders of about a dozen unions to the White House to explain how its energy program is good for jobs.Vice President Dick Cheney and Labor Secretary Elaine Chao told the leaders that building more power plants and increasing oil and gas drilling translates directly into more union jobs. In the recent past, environmentalists have depended on union support for an anti-business stance against development of natural resources and generation facilities.Following the meeting, Teamsters President James P. Hoffa told reporters he didn't think the labor leaders were being used. "Don't forget," he said, "American workers will be solving this problem. They will be building the resources to refine and generate new energy."The administration's energy plan is expected to call for simplifying the permitting process for power plant development, promote increased use of nuclear power, urge relaxation of restrictions against oil and gas exploration on federal land, and generally push development of the energy infrastructure.A feature of the plan released earlier would allow the federal government to use its power of eminent domain to secure transmission corridors for building needed new facilities to move electric power around the country.Hoffa said the Teamsters Union had not seen enough of the administration's plan to endorse it, but Mike Mathis, the union's government affairs director, said "We're going to be supportive of a program that creates jobs."
