Montana Power Gets Farther Away from Power
LCG, June 26, 2001Montana Power Co. said this morning it has arranged to buy out the remaining term of a power supply contract with an industrial customer, removing the former electric utility's exposure to uncertain future energy prices.The agreement involves a one-time payment by Montana Power of $62.5 million to Advanced Silicon Materials LLC and ends, as of June 30, the power supply contract that was in effect until the end of next year.Montana Power will soon be entirely out of the power business and will be a telephone company called Touchamerica, or maybe Touch America.Bob Gannon, Montana Power's chief executive, said "This action terminates a legacy industrial energy-supply obligation on generally favorable terms, and the contract has been removed from our agreement with North Western Corp., the buyer of our utility business.""We have enjoyed a good working relationship with Montana Power," said Advanced Silicon's Mike Kerschen. "They were an excellent partner, and we are happy to support their need to transition away from energy to telecommunications."
