South Korea Plans 10 More Nukes
LCG, July 12, 2001The Republic of Korea said in Seoul yesterday that it plans to add 10 new electric power nuclear reactors over the next 10 years to keep pace with growing electricity demand.Nuclear power plants now supply 40.9 percent of South Korea's electricity, and that percentage won't grow under the program. The addition of the new plants, which will have a combined capacity of 10,800 megawatts, will barely cover expected increases in demand.Prime Minister Lee Han-dong is chairman of a special government committee which announced the plan to complete two new reactors next year, another two in 2006, two more in 2008 and another four by 2011.A spokesman for the Ministry of Science and Technology said some of the reactors are already under construction. Eight will have a generating capacity of 1,000 megawatts each and the other two will produce 1,400 megawatts of power. In 2011, when the program is complete, South Korea will have 24 reactors producing about 40 percent of the nation's electricity. The prosperous south of the Korean Peninsula has the industrial capability to construct nuclear power plants without outside help.
