Calpine Plans 900 Megawatt Wisconsin Plant

LCG, July 17, 2001Calpine Corp. said this morning it plans to build a 900 megawatt merchant power plant in central Wisconsin. The Sherry Energy Center will be located near the town of Arpin, in Wood County.

Calpine said it had it had entered into agreements to sell 225 megawatts of the plant's capacity and power to Wisconsin Electric Power Co. and another 141 megawatts of capacity and power to Wisconsin Public Service Co.

The new facility will serve both baseload and peaking needs. The plant will include a 600 megawatt combined-cycle unit with two combustion turbines and a steam turbine, and also have a 300 megawatt simple-cycle unit with four combustion turbines.

Under a 10-year deal with Wisconsin Electric, the utility will have dispatch rights for 225 megawatts of the combined-cycle plant's output and will manage the purchase and delivery of fuel used to generate power for its use. A similar 10-year arrangement with Wisconsin Public Service is for dispatch right to 141 megawatts from the peaking unit and fuel management for its generation.

Calpine said the balance of the plant's 900 megawatts will be sold into the Wisconsin wholesale power market.

Construction of the $470 million facility is expected to begin next spring with commercial operation of the simple-cycle portion schedule for a year later. The combined-cycle facility is penciled in for commercial operation in the second quarter of 2004.
