EU Wants Czech Temelin Nuke Closed
LCG, Sept. 6, 2001--The European Parliament yesterday called for an international conference to consider permanent closure of the Czech Republic's Temelin nuclear power plant and to figure out how much money it would take to buy the Czechs off.The Parliament endorsed Austrian and German views that the Temelin plant, a Soviet design similar to that of Chernobyl, was unsafe. Temelin is located just 25 miles from the Austrian border, which has been periodically closed by demonstrators protesting the plant.The European Commission would call the conference and would decide on any compensation, a move that has precedent in the EU contribution of 200 million euros ($182 million U.S.) to Latvia for closure of a Soviet-designed plant in that country.Temelin, which has been under construction since 1987, was started for the first time last year, but has had numerous shutdowns because of problems with its turbine generator.During the late 1990s, Temelin's reactor controls and safety systems were upgraded to meet Western standards, chiefly by U.S. Westinghouse Electric Co.
