Progress Buys Two Georgia Projects from LG&E
LCG, Nov. 6, 2001--A subsidiary of Progress Energy inc. said yesterday it has agreed to purchase from LG&E Energy Corp. two power plants in Georgia with a combined capacity of 1,182 megawatts.Progress Ventures Inc. said it would pay $345 million for the two plants, the Monroe project in Monroe, Ga. which is a 496 megawatt natural gas-fired plant placed in service in June and the Tiger Creek project in Washington County, Ga., a planned 686 megawatt natural gas-fired plant expected to be operational by June 2003."This is an outstanding opportunity for Progress Ventures to execute on our generation expansion strategy in the Southeast," said Tom Kilgore, president, Progress Ventures. "Our existing generation adjacent to this Monroe facility and our expansion plans under way in Effingham County, Georgia provide synergy opportunities and give us a greater ability to create value from these plants."The transaction includes a power-purchase agreement with LG&E Marketing for both projects through Dec. 31, 2004. In addition, there is a project-management-completion agreement with LG&E to facilitate buildout of the Tiger Creek project.The deal is subject to approval by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and other regulatory agencies. The companies expect the transaction to be completed by early next year.
