Afghanis Get Power Assistance from Turkmenistan

LCG, March 18, 2002-Several energy projects were approved earlier this month with the intent of restructuring Afghanistan's power infrastructure.

In Asgabat, Turkmenistans president Saparmyat Turkembasy and Afghan head administrator Hamed Karzai met and signed documents to collaborate on energy-related development. Turkmenistan is apparently ready and willing to assist Afghanistan in improving its energy supply.

Afghanistan already buys electricity from neighboring Turkmenistan to power northern Afghanistan, but transmitted power is not sufficient for Afghanistan's planned reconstruction.

Turkmenistan will assist the expansion and modernization of power distribution in Afghanistan, including building a $1.5 million 50 MW line from southern Turkmenistan into Afghanistan to Mazar-e Sharif. Several other projects were agreed upon to build lines to Kabul and Kandahar. Total expenses were projected to be about $500 million.
