Citizens of Sri Lanka Experience Shrinking Power Cuts
LCG, April 22, 2002-Sri Lanka's Power and Energy Minister Karu Jayasuriya announced that daily power cuts will be decreased to only two hours.Daytime power cuts will no longer occur, and evening power cuts will be reduced. While Californian's complained about rolling blackouts in 2000 and 2001, Sri Lankans have endured more than five hours a day of blackouts. The country relies on hydro-electric power, and drought last year proved severely detrimental to electricity production.Jayasuriya asserted that full power will be restored by June, and a 900 MW coal-fired plant is being planned. The government has been encouraging renewable energy projects, hoping to limit dependence on hydroelectric and thermal power.
