Nevadans Testify on Upcoming Yucca Mountain Vote
LCG, Apr 26, 2002--Representatives from Nevada, including Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., testified yesterday on the use of their state's Yucca Mountain as a destination for nuclear waste before the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, charging the Department of Energy with having omitted environmental impact analyses on 54 of 131 sites producing spent nuclear fuel.DOE officials, when asked about fuel from research reactors at various universities that was not included in Energy Secretary Abraham's official recommendation to President Bush, said that whatever the amount from those 54 facilities might be, it could be described as a "small amount." The report mentioned 131 sites as being among those that would send nuclear fuel to Nevada. Rep. Jim Gibbons, R-Nev., said, "I am told the omission appears to be a blatant violation of the National Environmental Policy Act." A lawsuit is being filed regarding the issue. The testimony took place as the House Energy Committee voted 41-6 to override Nevada Gov. Kenny Guinn's veto of the DOE recommendation. In order for the plan to store 77,000 tons of nuclear fuel at Yucca Mountain over 24 years, starting in 2010, to proceed, the full House and Senate will need to produce majority votes to override Guinn's veto. The deputy director of the Yuca Mountain project for the DOE, Lake Barrett, said that transportation of waste to Nevada by road and rail, and perhaps barges, would not pose a great risk to those along the transportation routes. He told representatives, "I can give you the best technical evaluation of what the risks are, and they are very, very low."The majority-Republican House has necessary votes to override Guinn's veto, while the Democratic Senate is not clearly ready to take the same position. The House should vote on the matter in two weeks.
