Indian Power Woes Related to Idle Enron Plant
LCG, May 15, 2002-The Maharashtra State Electricity Board wants to put a 2,184 MW Enron-built Dabhol plant back on line because of shortages. Power distributor MSEB says the $2.8 billion plant could temporarily alleviate shortages, which will last until next month when the monsoon season begins. Currently peak demand is between 10,500 and 11,000 MW, and MSEB has been falling back on the National Power Grid Corp. to meet demand, in addition to load shedding. MSEB officials insist that demand will drop by about 2,000 MW once the monsoons come; temperatures in Bombay and other nearby cities often exceed 40 C or 104 F at this point in the year. Close to 30 foreign government institutions and agencies who lent a combined $1.9 to build the plant, which is located 250 km south of Bombay, are endeavoring to retrieve their money by selling the plant. The Dabhol plant is the largest independent gas-fired plant in the world, and Enron owns 65 percent.
