Peru Does Not Charge Belgian Energy Co. With Corruption
LCG, June 19, 2002--Belgian energy company Tractabel, which is a unit of French company Suez, says it is not being investigated for participating in corruption in Peru.Earlier today the Dow Jones reported that Tractabel was charged with bribing former Peruvian president Alberto Fujimori; a Tractabel spokesman reportedly said it amounted to $10 million worth of monetary encouragement since 1996.Later today, Tractebel said that, in fact, the company faced no such charges in Peru or anywhere else.A spokesman from the company reportedly said that Tractebel had always denied this charge. The company also denies that a witness reportedly sought in the alleged investigation, Pierre Bocquet, ever worked for Tractebel in Latin America.This very contentious charge, alleging corruption in Peru, comes directly after Tractabel bid successfully for Peruvian energy companies Egasa and Egesur.The sale of state-owned assets led to a pitched political battle, and protests over the weekend promped the cancellation of flights when protestors walked onto runways. Riots in Arequipa induced the government to announce a state of emergency. Many Peruvians fear that money from sales will be spent foolishly.The former president meanwhile faces charges of abandoning office and embezzlement; Alberto Fujimori has been living in Japan since 2000, when the Peruvian government collapsed.
