Illinois' First Wind Farm Would Produce for Chicago
LCG, July 2, 2002--Development of a 34-turbine wind farm is foreseen 110 miles west of Chicago, and would provide the Windy City with a portion of up to 51 megawatts of power.ComEd, which is hoping to bring the farm online by the middle of 2003, would use the entire output for its own customers. With Chicago as one of a number of potential customers, city officials intend to advance the city goal of meeting 20 percent of power requirements through renewable resources within five years. Environment Commissioner Marcia Jimenez said, "We expected some kind of mix that will include solar, landfill gas and hydropower as well." Besides ComEd, Illinois Wind Energy and Tomen Power Corp. would also have ownership stakes in the installation, which would be the largest such facility east of the Mississippi. It will be spread over 20 acres in Burea County, which experiences average wind speeds of 17 mph.
