Afghan Rogues Shoot Out Power Lines

LCG, August 12, 2002-Afghan Bandits with automatic rifles have repeatedly shot at power lines near the Kajaki Dam, confusing and worrying U.N. officials.

Last week damage inflicted on power lines resulted in electricity shortages during temperatures of 118 degrees (48 C). Although a few people in Kandahar, which receives electricity from the lines, own generators, most had to make do without power.

This shooting was the fourth in a period of two weeks.

It is not clear when the damaged lines will be repaired.
