Duke Pauses Construction on Washington Plant
LCG, Aug. 22, 2002--A 630-megawatt power plant in Washington state's Grays Harbor county has undergone a halt in construction, with market conditions impacting expected revenues from the plant.The plant, in Satsop, may be built eventually, but supply of electric power is currently sufficient for the Northwest region. Hydropower plants have reservoirs at normal levels, following dry conditions last year.The project director for Satsop, Duke Energy North America's Andy McNeil indicated that he does not feel that work will be permanently halted, as was the case with nuclear plant projects started on the same construction site in the late 1970's. "The only way this plant won't be completed is if the (energy) markets don't rebound," he said. Prices in Washington have averaged $17 to $20 per megawatt-hour recently.Other Duke projects which are not going forward for the moment are found in Deming, New Mexico, and near Las Vegas.
