China’s Three Gorges Set to Begin Operations August 2003

LCG, September 3, 2002According to the China Three Gorges Project Corporation, the worlds largest hydroelectric dam will begin to fill its reservoir as early as August 2003.

The Three Gorges Dam has been part of the Chinese government's long-term vision since Dr Sun Yat Sen, a Chinese revolutionary, thought up the idea of damming the Yangtze over 80 years ago. Chairman Mao Zedong included the project as a part of his Great Leap Forward in the 1950s. Today the vision is quickly becoming a reality, as over a million residents of the region are relocated and construction begins.

The completed Dam, rising some 590 feet, will have 26 turbines and cost at least $24 billion. The reservoir will be 400 miles long. According to the China Three Gorges Project Corp., construction on two turbines will be completed by August 2003. Two additional turbines will begin operations on the first of November, 2003, and the dam will be completed by 2009.

Many oppose the dam, citing unexplored environmental consequences, such as local earthquakes caused by the weight of water, and the ethics of relocating over a million people to places which are often quite far from their established homes.
