Another FirstEnergy Nuke Shut Down

LCG, September 24, 2002-FirstEnergy's Perry nuclear plant has been offline since Sunday.

According to plant officials, the plant went offline because of a false alarm, which indicated reportedly nonexistent damage to a turbine.

The plant will remain offline for a week until the alarm is repaired; meanwhile FirstEnergy's coal plants, as well as electricity bought from other companies, will replace the capacity lost by the shutdown.

FirstEnergy's David Besse plant was in the news earlier this year when corrosion of the reactor cap created a significant hole in the reactor vessel.
