Texas Units May Be Mothballed by Centerpoint Unit

LCG, Oct. 4, 2002--Citing a lack of demand for backup power produced at its older gas-fired facilities, CenterPoint Energy Inc.'s Texas Genco is asking the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) if it may temporarily shut down 3,400 megawatts of generation.

"The current surplus of generating capacity in ERCOT, coupled with the lack of bids for these units in our previous capacity auctions, has caused us to take this action," said Texas Genco president and CEO David Tees in a statement.

The length of time during which the units could be taken offline would be through at least May 2003. If ERCOT finds that capacity is needed for reliability, some generation could remain operational. Texas Genco's generation portfolio totals over 14,000 megawatts, and extends to coal and nuclear-based as well as gas-fired plants.
