Organizations Sue over UK Nuke Assistance
LCG, November 21, 2002-Power companies have sued regarding government assistance to nuclear generator British Energy PLC.Last month U.K. nuclear generator British Energy asked the British government if it would provide a loan in order to prevent the company from going bankrupt.The U.K. in turn approved a loan to the company on November 9 and on November 11 notified the European Union that it intended to loan the energy company more than $1 billion (£650 million) over an unspecified period of time.Now, energy companies, along with the Belgian government, have complained about the bailout.Energy company Ecotricity, along with environmental organization Greenpeace, will take the company to the British High Court tomorrow with allegations that the loans are illegal because the British government did not seek European Union approval before giving the loans.According to EU rules, such aid must have European Commission authorization before being granted.The case will be heard tomorrow morning at the Royal Courts of Justice on the Strand.
