First Turkey-Powered Plant Approved in Minnesota
LCG, May 13, 2003--A new power plant that burns turkey waste could be providing up to 50 megawatts of power by the middle of 2005, said a spokeswoman for the joint venture Fibrowatt LLC.Fibrowatt Ltd. and majority shareholder Energy Power Resources Ltd., Philadelphia- and U.K.-based companies respectively, have a 21-year agreement with Xcel Energy Inc. to provide the utility with renewable power, and contracts to obtain turkey litter from local farms. The plant is expected to cost $100 million.A minimum percentage of Xcel's power must come from renewable sources by Minnesota law. Although the regulatory approval for the project came in January, later than had been expected, construction could begin by the end of June, or early July. The supply of turkey waste will amount to about 500,000 tons annually, according to projections. Farmers who will supply the plant are scattered within a 60-mile radius of the town of Benson, the future project site. There are no other plants yet burning turkey waste in the U.S.
