Hurricane Isabel Leaves over 600,000 Without Electricity

LCG, September 18, 2003More than 638,000 people in North Carolina and Virginia lost power Thursday, when Hurricane Isabel struck.

The storm knocked over trees and snapped power lines, taking out electricity service in North Carolina and Virginia. More power outages are expected as Isabel continues on its path.

The storm has also caused 1,500 flights along the East Coast to be cancelled, and the eye came ashore at 2 pm EDT this afternoon, bringing gusts of up to 105 mph.

Many services in the Washington, D.C. area have also been shut down. The airport, subway, and Amtrak were closed in anticipation of the storm.

Duke Power, Dominion Virginia Power and Dominion North Carolina Power are among those that supply electricity to the affected region.
