PPL Agrees to Tear Down Maine Dams
LCG, Oct. 7, 2003--PPL Corporation will receive a payment of $25 million from environmental groups in return for tearing down dams the company owns on the Penobscot river and its tributaries, a move that is expected to lead to ten-fold population growth of Atlantic salmon.The compromise reached between company officials and environmentalists is such that the environmental groups will raise the necessary funds over approximately five years, after which demolition projects will open 500 miles of the river. Approximately 100 out of 75,000 dams have been torn down across the country, but the circumstances surrounding this most recent deal are unique. "We're being compensated fully for these dams, not only for the market value of the dams but for the future revenues from these dams," said Paul Wirth, a spokesman for PPL.The environmental groups, which included among numerous others Atlantic Salmon Federation and Trout Unlimited, started negotiations about two years ago. At that time, they opposed federal relicensing for many of PPL's dams, demands they have since dropped. Part of the agreement allows PPL to operate some dams at higher capacities, so that it can make up for 90 percent of the output that it will lose. The environmental coalition has said its members will not try to block relicensing of existing dams.In addition to rejeuvenating the population of Atlantic salmon, the removal of the dams should also spur growth of a range of other fish species. It may also result in increased fishing and recreational use of the river.
