Montana Could Have First Wind Farm Soon
LCG, June 6, 2003--The Golden Sunlight mine site could be home to a 50-megawatt wind farm following the end of operations at the mine, based on preliminary plans by developer Navitas.A lease agreement between Jefferson County's Local Development Corp. and Navitas is possible, although no representatives would discuss details of the ongoing talks. If a wind farm were built, 28 turbines could be installed on Golden Sunlight land, as well as land owned by the Bureau of Land Management. The anticipated capacity of the turbines is 50 megawatts. The actual output capacity of wind turbines is variable, unlike the dispatchable capacity of a conventional thermal power plant.NorthWestern Energy, which provides regulated electric power and natural gas service to residents of Minnesota, South Dakota and Nebraska, would need to agree to a power purchase contract for the facility to go forward. In addition, the approval of the Public Service Commission is required.
