Investigation Underway Over London Blackout
LCG, September 2, 2003Britains National Grid offered its apologies for last weeks blackout in London and noted that a full investigation had begun. On Thursday, equipment failure left Londons rush hour streets without power, trapping people in subways, halting trains, and stranding some 250,000 commuters in the rain. The subway was particularly poorly equipped to deal with the outage, as backup power could not be connected for fear of harming commuters trying to walk to safety from marooned subway cars. The event, while not nearly as serious as the East Coast blackout in the United States, has left the British questioning the reliability of their own transmission system. Senior power executives are scheduled to face cross-examinations by Trade and Industry Select Committee MPs regarding the blackout. A system of electricity substations called the 275KV South London Ring was the origin of the blackout. A transformer at Hurst in Kent was found to have gas in it and was taken out of service. When power was diverted to avoid this transformer, a power line between New Cross and Wimbledon switched off and caused the blackout. The line took 30 minutes to pinpoint and another 15 to fix, at which point London streets were already mired in chaos. Electricity transmission in London was privatized in 1990 and is run by National Grid.
