LNG Terminal Proposal for Northern California Cancelled
LCG, Mar. 19, 2004--A proposed liquid natural gas terminal that Calpine Corp. hoped to build in Humboldt County, California's Humboldt Bay will not be pursued, following a meeting of the Eureka City Council, at which the majority of speakers voiced opposition.Had the project gone ahead, it was to have started operations by 2011. The San Francisco Chronicle quoted Bill Highlander, a spokesman for Calpine, as saying, "We have withdrawn our plans. It became clear a majority of the community did not support the project, and community support for a project is very important to us."Currently, there are four such terminals operating in the U.S. One of the reasons given for community opposition to Calpine's proposal, in addition to concerns over environmental damage to the bay, was the potential for an explosion at the facility. It is not known whether Calpine officials will pursue a similar project elsewhere in Northern California. In statements given before Congress, Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan has cited liquid natural gas imports as one way to raise the supply of natural gas, and respond to the increased use of the fuel for electricity generation and heating.
