Opposition Rising Against Sempra's Proposed Coal Plant

LCG, February 15, 2005--Opponents to a new, coal-fired power plant in Nevada proposed by Sempra Energy Resources (Sempra) are getting organized. A filing was made on January 27 by a local conservationist requesting the State of Nevada to determine the water rights near the plant site in the Smoke Creek Desert, west of Gerlach. The State's evaluation and ruling may be a time-consuming process to evaluate water claims dating back to the 1800s.

Sempra's proposed, 1,450-MW Granite Fox Power Plant will require 16,000 acre-feet per year of water, a valuable resource to local ranchers and the Pyramid Lake Indians, who are concerned that the project would adversely effect the water flows to adjacent Honey Lake basin and Pyramid Lake.

The power generating station would be fueled with low-sulfur, Wyoming coal delivered via train, with two, 120-150 car trains per day. Consistent with other communities across the country, locals are concerned with changes caused by the railway, plus mercury and sulfur emissions from the plant.

Sempra officials tout the economic benefits to locals related to the proposed plant. Sempra also believes the plant, designed with sophisticated emissions control equipment, can provide clean, low-cost electricity to the region, including California.

The exports to California markets has raised other concerns, motivating one Gerlach resident to establish a group named "Keep California Pollution in California."
