Tentative Agreement Reached to Restart Bruce Power Nuclear Units
LCG, March 22, 2005--The Ontario Energy Minister announced yesterday that a tentative agreement has been reached with Bruce Power to restart Units 1 and 2 at the Bruce A nuclear generating station in Kincardine. The agreement has been approved in principle by the boards of directors of the major partners of Bruce Power and is now under review by the Ontario government. The government had issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) in June 2004 for 2,500 MW of new generation and/or conservation in Ontario.The two nuclear units commenced operations in 1977 and were shut down in 1995 and 1997 by the prior owner, Ontario Power Generation (OPG). The current owner, Bruce Power, is a partnership among Cameco Corporation (31.6%), Transcanada Corporation (31.6%), BPC Generation Infrastructure Trust (31.6%), the Power Workers Union (4%) and the Society of Energy Professionals (1.2%). Bruce Power leases the Bruce A and B nuclear generating stations from OPG under a long-term agreement. Bruce Power previously restarted Units 3 and 4 at Bruce A in the fourth quarter of 2003, following a facility review and related modifications. Each of the four units at Bruce A have a capacity of approximately 750 MW.The reactivation of Units 1 and 2 will act to somewhat compensate for the provincial government's planned closure of 7,600 MW of coal-fired, power generating capacity by 2008 in order to reduce air emissions. The first coal-fired station to be shutdown will be the Lakeview Generating Station, which is scheduled to occur by the end of April. The Lakeview station is located on the shores of Lake Ontario, about 15 miles southwest of Toronto. Prior to the shutdown of the 1,140-MW power station, Hydro One is to complete electric transmission system upgrades that allow for greater use of other power sources in place of the Lakeview Station. Both OPC and Hydro One are owned by the Province of Ontario.
