Duke Files to Build Two Coal-fired Units at Cliffside Steam Station
LCG, June 7, 2006--Duke Energy Carolinas filed on June 2 an application and supporting testimony with the North Carolina Utilities Commission to expand and upgrade the Cliffside Steam Station, located in Rutherford and Cleveland counties, North Carolina. The "Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity" (CPCN) application includes provisions to construct two, 800-MW coal-fired units.
Duke filed preliminary CPCN information for the Cliffside project with the North Carolina Utilities Commission in May 2005. The potential investment to build the two electric generating units is $2 billion. The first unit is scheduled to commence operations in 2011.
Duke's proposal for Cliffside includes the retirement of units 1-4, with a capacity of 160-MW.
The expansion at Cliffside is in addition to Duke's planned construction of two new nuclear reactors that would be jointly developed with Southern Company and located in South Carolina. "It is fundamental to our new generation strategy, which also includes moving ahead with an option to build a 2,234-megawatt nuclear plant in Cherokee County, South Carolina, and pursuing additional conservation programs and renewable technologies," said Duke Energy Carolinas President Ellen Ruff.
