Southern Company and Lakeland Electric Focus on New Coal Plant in Florida
LCG, November 8, 2006--Discussions between Southern Company and Lakeland Electric are now focused on a new coal plant to be built at Lakeland's McIntosh Power Plant in Florida. The new, 500-MW pulverized coal project is scheduled to commence operations in 2013.
Last summer it was announced that discussions included Southern investing in both existing and planned electric generating capacity at the McIntosh Power Plant. According to Lakeland Electric officials, Southern was considering the purchase of one-third interest in the existing Unit 5, which is fueled by natural gas and has generating capacity of 365 MW. Discussions also included Southern's possible 60 percent interest in a 500-MW pulverized coal project. The new coal unit would leverage existing coal-related infrastructure used to fuel Unit 3, an existing, coal-fired unit at McIntosh Power Plant. The incremental expansion could allow for a relatively low-cost, new unit.
Southern has now informed Lakeland that it is no longer interested in Unit 5, but discussions continue regarding the new, coal-fired unit.
The Florida Public Service Commission has shown a strong interest in enhancing fuel diversity through its support for the development of new coal-fired generating facilities in Florida.
