Sierra Pacific Resources Receives Approval to Build New Coal Units
LCG, November 9, 2006--The Nevada Public Utilities Commission approved yesterday a plan submitted by Sierra Pacific Resources to construct the 1,500-MW Ely Energy Center in eastern Nevada. The plan includes a new, 250-mile long transmission line that would connect Nevada's northern and southern regions, as well as the development of renewable energy resources.
The Ely Energy Center will be located in White Pine County and include two 750-MW, coal-fired electric generating units. The new units will use advanced, super-critical, pulverized coal technology, together with state-of-the-art emission control technologies. The plant will be designed to burn coal from the Powder River Basin. The first unit is to commence service in 2011, with operation of the second unit to follow within three years.
The estimated cost of the initial phase of the Ely Energy Center is approximately $3.2 billion, excluding the cost of electric transmission facilities. A future, phase two expansion of the energy complex is planned that would consist of two, 500-MW units that use coal gasification technology. If completed, the total electric generating capacity of the station would be approximately 2,500 MW.
Sierra Pacific Resources' principal subsidiaries are Nevada Power Company, the electric utility serving much of southern Nevada, and Sierra Pacific Power Company, which serves most of northern Nevada, together with customers in California in the vicinity of Lake Tahoe.
