Groundbreaking for Solar PV Projects in Ontario
LCG, March 30, 2010--The groundbreaking ceremony occurred yesterday for two solar photovoltaic (PV) projects located in Norfolk County, Ontario. The projects, SunE Sky Norfolk I and II, have a combined electric generating capacity of 18 MW.
SunEdison, a subsidiary of MEMC Electronic Materials, and SkyPower Limited are developing the projects under a joint venture agreement, and the Ontario Power Authority (OPA) has contracted to purchase the electricity generated.
In January, the Ontario government announced that it signed an agreement with a Korean consortium to invest C$7 billion to generate 2,500 MW of wind and solar power. The consortium, led by Samsung C&T Corporation and the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), will work with major partners to attract four manufacturing plants related to wind and solar technology for use in Ontario and export to the United States.
Ontario's commitment toward renewable power follows revisions last year to Ontario Power Generation's (OPG) plans to close four coal-fired, power plants, with a combined generating capacity of 2,000 MW, four years ahead of schedule.
