New 300-MW Coal Unit Dedicated in Missouri
LCG, November 17, 2010--City Utilities of Springfield (CU) last Wednesday dedicated and synched to the grid Southwest Power Station Unit 2, a 300-MW coal unit located in Springfield, Missouri. Following additional testing, commercial operation is scheduled to commence in early January.
The coal-fired project, which cost $697 million (including financing), was built following persistent opposition to the plant. Springfield voters turned down the municipal power project in August 2004, but later approved the project in June 2006.
The President and CEO of the American Public Power Association attended the event and stated, "We are currently having a national debate about the merits of different power resources - coal, natural gas, renewable, nuclear and energy efficiency. But the fact, is that we need all of them, including coal, to maintain a diverse, reliable power supply. The state-of-the art technology built into SW2 assures that its power will not only be affordable and reliable, but will also meet the strictest emissions standards."
