Army Corps Issues Permit for Cape Wind Project
LCG, January 7, 2011--The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers made its determination Wednesday to issue a Corps permit for the Cape Wind, LLC wind energy facility proposal to install wind turbines in Nantucket Sound, Massachusetts. The project developer has pursued government approval since 2001 and completed State and local permitting in 2009.
The 468-MW, Cape Wind Project will include 130, 3.6-MW wind turbines and will connect to the power grid via a 66.5-mile, buried submarine transmission cable system. Cape Wind, LLC has contracted with Siemens for the wind turbines, and Siemens may help finance the construction of the project. A Siemens spokesperson recently stated, "We have been in discussions to help finance debt and equity....We'd be willing to be a part if it's required."
The project developer plans to commence construction by the end of 2011 and to start delivering power to the grid by early 2013.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) must still issue a permit for air emissions during construction.
