PSEG Nuclear Receives License Extension from NRC for Salem Generating Station
LCG, July 1, 2011--The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) yesterday approved PSEG Nuclear's request to extend the operating licenses of Salem Generating Station Units 1 and 2 for an additional 20 years. The company anticipates that the NRC will announce a decision regarding the license renewal of its Hope Creek Generating Station within the next few weeks.
The initial 40-year, operating licenses for Unit 1 and 2 were scheduled to expire in 2016 and 2020. With the extensions, Unit 1 and 2 are licensed to operate through 2036 and 2040, respectively. PSEG Nuclear filed its request for the extensions in August 2009.
Salem Units 1 and 2 each have a net generating capacity of approximately 1,175 MW and are significant providers of base load, carbon-free electricity.
PSEG Nuclear's president and chief nuclear officer stated, "The license renewal of Salem is part of our ongoing commitment to provide safe, reliable energy to New Jersey and the region. Today's milestone is the direct result of our employees past and present who have played a key role in our success."
PSEG Nuclear is also continuing to pursue constructing another nuclear plant in Salem County. In May 2010, the company filed an application for an early site permit (ESP) and expects an NRC decision by the end of 2013.
