New York Governor Looks for Options to Indian Point
LCG, September 27, 2011--New York Governor Andrew Cuomo believes that the carbon-free power generated by Indian Point Energy Center, a nuclear power plant located on the Hudson River about 24 miles north of New York City, can be replaced by other electric generating sources.
Following the earthquake and tsunami in Japan last March and the subsequent issues at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant, nuclear plants in the United States, especially those located near large population centers, have been under increased scrutiny.
The Governor recently stated, "There is no doubt that we need replacement power if we are to close Indian Point. There is also no doubt that we can find it....We can retrofit old plants, we can site new plants, we can improve transmission lines. So if we want to find replacement power, we can."
The Indian Point Energy Center, owned by Entergy, includes two nuclear units with a combined generating capacity of 2,069 MW. The 40-year operating licenses for the two units are scheduled to expire on September 28, 2013 and December 15, 2015, respectively, and Entergy has applied for 20-year extensions for both units.
