NuScale Power LLC Submits Proposal to DOE for SMRs
LCG, May 22, 2012--NuScale Power LLC announced yesterday that it has submitted its proposal to participate in a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) program to accelerate the deployment of small modular reactors (SMRs). South Carolina Gas & Electric (SCE&G), a division of SCANA, has agreed to lead the formation of a consortium to license and operate the first NuScale plant at the Savannah River Site.
NuScale states that it is on schedule to allow the first plant using its technology to commence commercial operation within the next decade. NuScale initiated the pre-application interactions on its SMR design with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in July 2008.
Design objectives include scalability and maximum safety. The design employs a natural circulation light water reactor with the reactor core and helical coil steam generator located in a common reactor vessel in a cylindrical steel containment. The reactor vessel/containment module is submerged in water in the reactor building safety related pool. The reactor building is located below grade and designed to hold 12 SMRs, each with a 45 MW output, or a total potential electric generating capacity of 540 MW.
The CEO of NuScale Power stated, "Our approach offers DOE a plant with innovative new safety features and true scalability, which enable it to achieve a wide range of outputs to meet the power demands of individual utilities. We are grateful that our government is helping American companies recapture the technological lead in the international nuclear power industry.... NuScale's design development began in 2000 under a DOE-funded research program. Its design reflects 12 years of evolution and refinement, and has been validated through comprehensive testing in a one-third scale prototype test facility, which began operating in 2003. To date we have invested nearly $100 million in private funds in commercializing the NuScale technology."
NuScale Power has the technical assistance of Fluor Corporation, which has designed, built or provided construction support for 20 nuclear units in the U.S. and provides services to nuclear plant operators globally.
