California Solar Thermal Project Achieves "First Sync" to Grid

LCG, September 25, 2013--BrightSource Energy Inc. announced yesterday that the Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System produced its first output of electricity when the Unit 1 station was synchronized to the power grid for the first time. The electric generating capacity of the project, located in California?s Mojave Desert, is 377 MW (net).

The Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System project will be the world's largest solar thermal plant, utilizing 3,500 acres of public land. The project employs a power tower technology that includes large heliostats that track (in two dimensions) the sun throughout the day to focus the sun's energy on boilers positioned atop 459 foot tall towers. The sun's energy heats the water to create superheated steam that drives turbines and generators to produce electricity.

The project is jointly-owned by NRG Energy, Inc., BrightSource Energy, Inc. and Google. Bechtel is responsible for project engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning.

Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) has a power purchase agreement (PPA) for the energy produced from Unit 1 and Unit 3. Southern California Edison has a PPA for the power generated from Unit 2.
