Ground-Breaking Ceremony Held for 250-MW Moapa Southern Paiute Solar Project in Nevada
LCG, March 26, 2014 - Construction on the 250-MW Moapa Southern Paiute Solar Project commenced late last week. The project, located on 2,000 acres of the Moapa River Indian Reservation just north of Las Vegas, Nevada, is scheduled to be fully operational at the end of 2015.
The project owner is Moapa Southern Paiute Solar, LLC (a subsidiary of First Solar Electric, LLC). The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) has 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for the electricity produced by the energy facility.
In September 2013, First Solar announced that it had acquired the Southern Paiute Solar Project from K Road Power. The project will use First Solar?s advanced photovoltaic (PV) thin film solar modules. The project also includes an onsite substation and a new, 5.5 mile 500 kV transmission line to connect to the existing Crystal Substation, which provides access to California.
"The Moapa Southern Paiute Solar Project is a significant step toward the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power's effort to achieve a major transformation of the city's power supply?one that has greater reliance on renewable energy resources and zero coal power," said the LADWP General Manager.
The project supports LADWP's goal to expand renewable energy to 33 percent of its total power supply and to terminate the use of coal power. After the Moapa Southern Paiute Solar Project commences operations, LADWP anticipates ending receipt of coal-fired electricity from the Navajo Generating Station located in Arizona) by the end of 2015.
