MHI-Vestas Receives Turbine Order for 330-MW Offshore Wind Farm

LCG, December 17, 2015--MHI Vestas has received an order for 40 wind turbines to supply the 330-MW Walney Extension West project in the Irish Sea. The agreement includes a five-year servicing arrangement. The project installation is scheduled to begin in 2017 and to be completed in 2018.

MHI Vestas, a 50/50 joint venture between Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and Vestas Wind Systems A/S, will provide the V164-8 MW turbines, which are now uprated using Vestas' 'power mode' option to produce 8.25 MW per turbine.

The existing Walney Offshore Wind Farm is located approximately nine miles west of Walney Island off the coast of Cumbria in the Irish Sea. The wind farm began commercial operation in 2012 and consists of 102 turbines supplied by Siemens Wind Power, each with a capacity of 3.6 MW.

The Walney Extension West project, which will use the MHI Vestas turbines, will be installed northwest of the existing Walney Offshore Wind Farm.

A second expansion will be Dong's 329 MW Walney Extension East project that will be built adjacent to the 330 MW Walney Extension West project. Last March DONG Energy announced the selection of Siemens AG to supply its 7.0-MW direct drive wind turbine for this extension project.

Both MHI Vestas and Siemens were named preferred suppliers early this year.
