Florida Power & Light Achieves Operations for Four New Solar Power Facilities

LCG, January 10, 2018--Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) Monday announced that four new solar power facilities began delivering power to the grid to supply FPL customers on January 1. FPL further stated that four more new solar plants are scheduled to commence service by March 1, 2018. Together, these eight solar plants will add nearly 600 MW of new, carbon-neutral electric generating capacity.

FPL also announced that last week, the coal-fired St. Johns River Power Park in Jacksonville was officially retired by co-owners FPL and JEA, the municipal electric provider for the City of Jacksonville. The approximately 1,300-MW power plant served customers of the two utilities for many years, but it was no longer economical to operate. The plant was built in the early 1980s, with Unit 1 beginning commercial production in March 1987 and Unit 2 beginning operation in May 1988. FPL included these plans to add solar generation and to retire coal facilities last April as part of its 2017-2026 Ten Year Site Plan and its ongoing strategy of advancing clean energy.

The four new solar electric generating facilities that are now operating are: FPL Horizon Solar Energy Center, FPL Coral Farms Solar Energy Center, FPL Indian River Solar Energy Center and FPL Wildflower Solar Energy Center. The four facilities under construction and expected to commence operations by March 1 are: FPL Barefoot Bay Solar Energy Center, FPL Blue Cypress Solar Energy Center, FPL Hammock Solar Energy Center and FPL Loggerhead Solar Energy Center. Each of the eight projects have an electric generating capacity of 74.5 MW.
